    Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America proudly partner to improve service to vulnerable seniors who are struggling with hunger. We collaborate at the national level to raise awareness about the serious and growing problem of senior hunger and at the local level to expand our ability to serve more in need.

    Through this effort, we aim to leverage shared innovations and resources to increase the visibility of the problem and identify tangible solutions to address senior hunger in America. Together, we can work to ensure that all older adults in our country have access to the food they need to stay healthy and independent in their communities.     Feeding America food banks and Meals on Wheels America member senior nutrition programs share a common vision for every senior to have access to the food they need to stay healthy. Food banks and senior nutrition programs often have complementary strengths and strategies that make partnerships mutually beneficial.

    Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America have identified seven common examples of effective partnership models between Feeding America network food banks and Meals on Wheels America members, and this one-pager provides an overview of each of them.

    HOW WE CAN ADVOCATE TOGETHER

    Together, we can amplify our message to secure better support for seniors living at risk of hunger and shine light on the issue. To help make a difference in the lives of the seniors we serve and seniors eligible for our services, we engage members of the public and Members of Congress to speak out on behalf of vulnerable seniors. 

    Protecting seniors from food insecurity and hunger is complex because of their varying abilities to purchase and prepare food. That is why Feeding America food banks and Meals on Wheels organizations are working in tandem to ensure that seniors continue to have access to assistance as they age. ​Learn more about our shared advocacy agenda below.

    SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP)

    • Ensure SNAP benefits are adequate.
    • Strengthen SNAP policies for seniors to close the Senior SNAP GAP and ensure access for all eligible food-insecure seniors, such as simplified applications and standard medical deductions.

    COMMODITY SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM (CSFP)

    • Provide enough funding for CSFP to maintain current caseloads and expand the program nationwide. Currently, CSFP operates in only 47 states, plus the District of Columbia and two Indian reservations. 

    OLDER AMERICANS ACT (OAA) NUTRITION PROGRAMS

    • Protect and strengthen the Older Americans Act that supports the delivery of social and preventative services to some of our nations most isolated and vulnerable Americans, including nutritious home-delivered and congregate meals for 2.4 million seniors.
    • Fund OAA Nutrition Programs at a level that is adequate to meet both the growing need and the increased cost of service and protect them from harsh and unnecessary sequestration cuts.
