STORYCORPS: HEARTWARMING STORIES TO
INSPIRE POWERFUL ACTION

The StoryCorps app allows the Meals on Wheels network to join other food and nutrition safety net organizations in filling the Library of Congress with interviews that help paint an accurate picture of what hunger and isolation in America looks like today. By broadcasting our seniors' stories in their own words, we can more compellingly express how the lack of nutritious food creates barriers to leading a healthy life and how Meals on Wheels can truly make a difference.

MAKING SURE OUR SENIORS’ STORIES ARE HEARD

The StoryCorps app guides you through an interview process on an iPhone or Android and we've created step-by-step guidelines, suggested questions and other resources to help you along the way. The StoryCorps.me website provides a digital home for the interviews that you can share across your own social media networks, website and communications. In addition, all interviews uploaded to the platform during the first year of the program will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress so that Members of Congress can pull from these real-life accounts in their fight for the rights of our seniors.

GETTING STARTED

  1. Download the StoryCorps app from the iTunes App Store (Apple users) or Google Play (Android users) to your mobile device.

  2. Watch this helpful tutorial!

  3. Distribute this customizable flyer describing the opportunity to potential interview participants. These could be senior clients, volunteers or even program staff.

  4. Arrange a day, time (the interview process typically takes 30-45 minutes in total) and quiet place for the interview with those who agree to participate.

  5. Gather a list of questions—you can either write your own, choose from those listed in the question generator built into the app, or from those we suggested in the Interviewer's Guide. When compiling your questions, don’t try to fit too many questions into one interview.
