Reach out directly to Subaru retailers in your area to plan local events for the Share the Love Event. Retailers are under no obligation to participate in a “local activation.” As there are multiple charities participating in this year’s Share the Love Event and the holiday season is an extremely busy time for retailers, Subaru asks that the amount of outreach to its retailers be kept to a reasonable minimum.

To get you started, Subaru has created a helpful Reach Out Guide to assist you with your 2017 Share the Love Local Event Activation.

LOCAL ACTIVATION IDEAS

Focus your efforts on events and activities that have the potential to influence many audiences within your community. Each local activation should be able to generate social media content, local media coverage and/or worthy outreach to your network of supports.

Remember: The more qualified activities you can execute, the greater your share of revenue

IDEAS BY PARTICIPATION CATEGORY

Events and In-Person Gatherings

  • A great way to kick-off Subaru’s season of giving is by hosting a commemorative event at your office or your local Subaru retailer on Thursday, November 16. Check out a few of our ideas here. (Simply holding an event would complete one activity and any digital, stakeholder engagement or public relations related to the event would work towards completing other activities.)
  • Ask the Subaru retailer to help serve holiday meals at your Member program’s congregate site, donate gifts for each attendee or even co-host the event with you. (Simply holding an event would complete one activity and any digital, stakeholder engagement or public relations related to the event would work towards completing other activities.)
  • Throw an event in the retailer parking lot – such a food truck competition – to raise additional attention and support for your program and to draw new audiences to check out a Subaru.
  • Work with the retailer to promote Meals on Wheels and Subaru’s longstanding partnership in local holiday parades. Fill a wrapped Subaru vehicle with staff or volunteers and participate in an existing parade or initiate your own parade of Meals on Wheels-wrapped Subaru vehicles down your Main Street. Notify press of your activities so that they can follow.
  • Engage your community in a food drive to create nonperishable “blizzard bags” or meet other needs. Popular activities have been “Stuff the Trunk” style drives where supporters can drop off items at the retailer. Once the trunk is full of donated items for your program, the retailer can ceremoniously drive it to your program to deliver. You could also part a Subaru vehicle at a partnering grocery story for visibility outside of the retail location.
  • Set up an informational table about the work you do and your affiliation with Meals on Wheels at the retailer to attract volunteers and support.
  • Tie Share the Love Event promotion into existing events and campaigns you’re already involved with in the community. For example, if you already do a food drive or host a gala at the end of the year, use it as an opportunity to spread the word. Try rebranding it as your “Share the Love Event Food Drive,” even.
  • Team up with fellow participating Members in your area to hold an event and/or promotions with even bigger reach. The more program involvement, the higher the potential for revenue! Brand your thanksgiving meal deliveries as “Share the Love.” When volunteers come to pick up their meals for delivery, have an informational table about the Share the Love Event.

Public Relations

  • Invite your local media to attend any of your Share the Love related events. The resulting news coverage would complete one activity under public relations.
  • Encourage joint commercials, public service announcements or other advertisements throughout the event with your local Subaru retailer. Any resulting ad placement would complete one activity under public relations.
  • Submit Share the Love Event information to any local online community calendars. The resulting posts would complete one activity under public relations.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • If you're holding an event related to Share the Love, you can complete additional qualified activities by publicizing the event in a direct mail letter, an email to your donors/volunteers or in your newsletter.
  • Tell your donors, volunteers and other supporters about Meals on Wheels' involvement in the Share the Love Event through a direct mail letter, an email and/or in your newsletter.
  • Ask the retailer to donate a set amount to your program for every test drive during a specified time frame and promote the offer in a direct mail letter, an email to your donors/volunteers or in your newsletter.
  • If your retailer already has been volunteering for years, incorporate that impressive support information in a direct mail letter, an email to your donors/volunteers or in your newsletter.

Digital

  • If you're holding an event related to Share the Love, you can complete additional qualified activities by publicizing the event on your social media channels, blog or website.
  • Share “Share the Love” notes expressing how Meals on Wheels – and Subaru’s ongoing support – makes your clients feel loved on your social media, blog and/or website.
  • Share the stories and pictures of staff and volunteers who drive a Subaru to deliver meals on your social media, blog and/or website.
