Every “Yes” Matters
For years, Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City was able to do something many providers across the country struggle to sustain: say “yes” to every eligible senior who needed home-delivered meals.
“If someone qualified, we could say, ‘We’ll see you tomorrow,’” recalls Executive Director Chris Lambert. “They would begin receiving five meals per week right away.”
The Reality Behind Senior Meal Funding Shortages
That immediate response wasn’t just operational success — it was peace of mind for seniors and their families. It meant no uncertainty, no delays, and no unanswered needs.
But that reality has changed.
As demand has grown and resources have tightened, Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City has had to make an incredibly difficult shift: placing eligible seniors on a waitlist.
“I was so amazed by how tough it was to have to start telling people, ‘Well, you’ll have to wait for a little while,’” Chris says.
Turning “Wait” Back Into “Yes”
For an organization built on showing up — day after day, meal after meal — those words don’t come easily.
The truth is simple and sobering: waitlists aren’t caused by a lack of need. They’re caused by a lack of funding.
“Unfortunately, the only way to really get rid of the waitlist is through additional funding,” Chris explains.
Each meal delivered requires staff, volunteers, food, transportation and coordination. When those resources fall short, even the most committed organizations are forced to pause — not because they want to, but because they must.
Behind every name on the waitlist is a senior waiting not just for food, but for reliability, nutrition, and human connection. And for Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City, the goal remains the same as it’s always been: to return to a place where “yes” is the only answer.
