ARLINGTON, Va., July 3, 2025 – Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of budget reconciliation bill H.R.1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” sending it to the president for signature:

Less than two weeks before the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act – a moment when Congress demonstrated foresight and commitment to prioritizing the dignity, independence and well-being of America’s seniors – it is distressing that this Congress has passed a budget reconciliation package that undermines that prior promise made. This action jeopardizes the health and well-being of millions of seniors, which is especially troubling given that the senior population has grown significantly and the need is greater than ever.

Historic cuts and damaging policy changes to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will worsen senior hunger and hardship while placing even greater strain on community-based Meals on Wheels providers that are already operating on razor-thin margins. With need rising and federal funding falling short, many are already facing growing waitlists. H.R.1 will leave more older adults without the meals, wellness checks and moments of human connection they need to age safely and with dignity in their own homes, and it will ultimately cost taxpayers much more in preventable health care and long-term care expenses.

As this bill heads to the president’s desk, we urge the administration to carefully consider the impact these provisions will have and reject policies that weaken support for aging Americans.
