A Little Dog with a Big Heart

As her husband battled kidney failure, Melody adopted Max, a Chihuahua-pinscher mix, to boost his spirits.

The tiny dog quickly became part of the family. She took him on hospital visits and later to hospice, where Max remained a comforting presence during her husband’s final days.

“Max really made my husband feel good,” Melody said. “He was a companion for him.”

After her husband of three decades passed, Melody faced heartbreak, but her challenges didn’t end there. She later experienced her own debilitating illnesses, including carotid artery surgery that left her with 75 staples, followed by open-heart surgery.

Throughout those difficult years, the dog who had once comforted her husband came to comfort her. As she recovered in the hospital and, later, a nursing home, her daughter brought Max to visit. Seeing him gave Melody the strength to keep moving.

“If it wasn’t for my dog, I probably wouldn’t have made it through,” she said. “I don’t think I’d be here.”

Finding Companionship and Comfort After Loss

For many older adults, the loss of a spouse can mean navigating life alone for the first time in decades. As social circles become smaller with age, grief is often accompanied by fewer opportunities for connection and emotional support.

Research conducted by Meals on Wheels America with support from PetSmart Charities suggests pets play an important role during those difficult periods. Nearly every Meals on Wheels client with a pet says their animal helps them feel less lonely, while 97% say their pet comforts them when they’re experiencing difficult emotions. Clients with pets also report stronger social engagement with family and friends than those without pets.

That’s certainly been the case for Melody. In the wake of her husband’s passing, Max’s quiet presence helped her navigate grief one day at a time.

“If I’m crying,” she said, “he’ll come right up to me and lick my tears.”

Keeping Companions Together

As comforting as Max is, caring for him on a limited income isn’t always easy. Food, veterinary care and other expenses can quickly add up.

Thankfully, Melody and Max receive support through Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County in New Hampshire. Along with delivering nutritious meals for seniors like Melody, the organization participates in Meals on Wheels Loves Pets, a program powered by PetSmart Charities that helps local providers offer pet food, pet supplies and other services to Max and many thousands of other companion animals.

For Melody, this means she can keep caring for the furry friend who’s loved her through life’s hardest moments.

“I wouldn’t trade Max for the world,” she said. “He’s my baby.”
