When vision loss left Sharon isolated and struggling, Meals on Wheels stepped in with meals for her and pet care for her beloved dog, Kali Mae. Learn how Meals on Wheels partners with companies like PetSmart Charities to help provide support for seniors with pets.
As a dachshund, Kali Mae isn’t the biggest dog in the park. But this pint-sized pup holds a huge place in her owner Sharon’s heart.
“My dog is what keeps me going,” said Sharon, who lives in Lorena, Texas. “We’re best friends.”
More than 20 years ago, Sharon was diagnosed with macular degeneration, a devastating eye disorder that causes progressive vision loss. Now unable to drive or even recognize the faces of long-time friends, Sharon spends most of her days at home with just Kali Mae by her side.
“She’s seven years old. I’ve had her since she was six weeks old,” Sharon said. “There’s nobody but me and her. She is attached to me as much as I’m attached to her.”
Despite her disorder, Sharon worked hard to support herself, first driving a school bus and later working at a large retailer, but as her vision declined, she was forced to retire. Today, she lives on a fixed income, which isn’t easy. At points, Sharon has resorted to feeding Kali Mae her own food.
“It’s so hard,” Sharon said. “You sometimes have to make some very tough choices.”
When Sharon connected with Meals on Wheels Waco, those choices got easier.
Today, volunteers deliver nutritious meals for Sharon, and thanks to a national partnership with PetSmart Charities, she can also count on kibble for her short-legged sidekick. Kali Mae also receives veterinary care through the program.
Sharon said this support has made all the difference, helping her and her pooch stay happy and healthy.
“I feel very blessed with everything,” she said. “I have a lot to be thankful for.”
One thing Sharon is especially grateful for is Kali Mae.
“She loves me, and I love her,” Sharon said. “We stick together.”
