More Than a Delivery
For Judy, volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City is about much more than delivering food. It’s about showing up for neighbors who may have no one else to rely on.
“That large waitlist surprises me,” Judy says while preparing meals alongside other volunteers. “Meals on Wheels is really important for those people who need help.”
In the kitchen, Judy carefully chops vegetables and prepares chicken before helping pack trays of freshly made meals. Later, she loads delivery bags into her car and heads out on her route, bringing nutritious meals directly to homebound seniors across the community.
Many of the individuals she visits are older adults living alone without nearby family or reliable support systems.
“A lot of these people that we deliver Meals on Wheels to maybe don’t have family,” Judy explains. “They’re homebound, they’re elderly, and they have no other way to get food — especially nutritional food.”
Why Volunteers Matter More Than Ever
For volunteers like Judy, every meal represents more than nourishment. It’s reassurance. It’s a wellness check. It’s a reminder to seniors that someone cares enough to stop by and make sure they’re okay.
Volunteers are the heart of Meals on Wheels. From preparing meals in the kitchen to delivering them door-to-door, they help ensure older adults receive not only nutritious food, but also connection and compassion.
And as waitlists continue to grow, that support has never been more important.
Through simple acts of service — chopping vegetables, packing meals, making deliveries — volunteers like Judy help make it possible for seniors to remain safe, nourished and independent in their own homes.
