Tax-Wise Giving

Your caring support of Meals on Wheels America means a great deal to us and to the thousands of seniors who rely on our programs. To help ensure you get the most from your thoughtful generosity, here are some giving options that can offer you added benefits, like tax savings:

Why Consider Tax-Wise Giving?

Many supporters choose tax-wise giving because certain charitable gifts may reduce taxes while allowing them to make an even greater impact. Depending on your financial situation, giving through assets such as retirement accounts, appreciated stock, donor-advised funds or real estate may offer advantages beyond a traditional cash donation.

Because every donor’s circumstances are unique, we encourage you to consult your financial or tax advisor before making a charitable gift.

Gift from Your IRA
(Qualified Charitable Distribution)

If you’re 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free transfer from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Meals on Wheels America. For many retirees, this can be the most tax-effective way to help provide nourishment, care and connection to vulnerable seniors. With a gift from your IRA, you…

  • Avoid paying taxes you might otherwise owe on the distribution.
  • Do not have to itemize your return to secure tax savings.
  • Can make an immediate difference for older Americans.

You (and your partner or spouse, if they have an IRA) can give up to $111,000 this year through your IRA. The amount you transfer to Meals on Wheels America also counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD), if applicable.

Gift of Stock

Do you have stock certificates that you or a family member purchased long ago, or a brokerage account that has grown in value?

When making a donation to Meals on Wheels America, consider giving appreciated stock or other securities to receive greater tax benefits. When you donate stock that has increased in value and that you’ve held for more than one year, you could:

  • Make a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of eligible securities.
  • Avoid capital gains taxes you might otherwise owe.
  • Make a larger charitable impact with appreciated assets.

Donor-Advised
Fund Grant

If you’ve established a donor-advised fund (DAF), recommending a grant to Meals on Wheels America can be a simple and tax-efficient way to support older adults.

  • You can establish a DAF with a sponsoring organization.
  • You’re contribution to your DAF receives a charitable deduction.
  • You can recommend grants from your DAF to charities like Meals on Wheels America.

Because the funds in your DAF grow tax-free, you could make an even greater impact for seniors with a more substantial grant than with a gift with post-tax dollars.

Gift of Real Estate

By donating real estate to Meals on Wheels America, you can receive tax savings and free yourself from the responsibilities of maintaining or selling a property.

Meals on Wheels America partners with Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS) to process real estate donations to benefit our vital work for seniors. Through our partnership with Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS), we may be able to accept:

  • Residential property
  • Commercial property
  • Vacant land

In many cases, properties with mortgages, deferred maintenance or outstanding taxes may still qualify. CARS will pay off all loans, liens and commissions owed and pay all closing costs.

If you have real estate that is costing you money or not being used, donating it is a great way to give back. You may even be able to claim a significant tax deduction, as long as the property has equity and meets the other requirements of CARS and Meals on Wheels America.
