For seniors like Teresa and Mike, health challenges often present a challenge throughout everyday life. After experiencing a life-changing accident and being diagnosed with an inoperable tumor, Mike's health has been a constant area of concern for the couple. After an extensive surgery and recovery period with Harvey and Sylvia by their side, Mike's health continued to improve, regaining his ability to walk unassisted again.
Teresa was terrified. It was a Monday morning, and her husband, Mike, had just fallen on the bathroom floor. As he cried out in pain, the past six years flashed through her mind.
In 2017, Mike’s life took a drastic turn after a traumatic motorcycle accident. During his hospital stay, doctors found a small tumor. In December 2022, another scan revealed that the tumor had grown almost three centimeters. Sadly, doctors deemed the growth inoperable.
As the months wore on, Mike’s health rapidly deteriorated. He lost control of his left leg and started experiencing uncharacteristic behavior changes. And now, he was writhing on their bathroom floor. Teresa tried to help him up but didn’t have the strength.
Right as panic set in, Meals on Wheels volunteers Harvey and Sylvia Tarpley arrived, accompanied by Sheriff Jud Smith for a special “March for Meals” ride-along. Together, the two men lifted Mike to a chair and called 911. “I know Teresa couldn’t have done it alone, but neither could I,” Harvey said, reflecting on that morning. “There was a reason Sheriff Smith was there that day. People are put into our lives for a reason.”
The same could be said for the surgeon assigned to Mike’s case when he arrived at the hospital. After reviewing Mike’s scans, the doctor felt confident he could remove the fast-growing tumor. Finally, after six hard years, Teresa and Mike were offered a glimmer of hope.
In the coming months, Mike underwent extensive surgery and rehabilitation. Through it all, Harvey and Sylvia stood by Teresa’s side, providing much-needed emotional support. “They are my heroes — a blessing sent to me that day and every day since,” Teresa said tearfully.

This story is a testament to the immeasurable impact of Meals on Wheels. In addition to delivering warm, nutritious food to Teresa and Mike’s doorstep, Harvey and Sylvia delivered compassion and companionship. They helped the aging couple feel less alone during one of the hardest times of their lives, reminding us of the extraordinary power of a knock.
Today, Mike’s health is improving. Step by step, he has regained his ability to walk unassisted.
