FRIDAY IS THE LAST DAY TO JOIN THE FIRST-EVER ONLINE VOLUNTEER DRIVE

Most Meals on Wheels programs can never have enough all-star volunteers and that’s why we’ve launched our first-ever Meals on Wheels Online Volunteer Drive – just in time for summer. And Subaru is supporting the Drive to help make it a success for you and your program.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

  1. Register your organization as a participating Meals on Wheels program no later than Friday, May 29 and tell us exactly what you need from your new volunteers.
  2. Spread the word using your own tools and our new Online Volunteer Drive toolkit for ideas, templates and resources.
  3. Be ready to partner with a local Subaru retailer – many will be reaching out to local Member programs to work together in June.
  4. Put your new volunteers to work!
  5. Tell us how it went through a post-Drive survey so we can continue to deliver impactful campaigns in the future.

REGISTER NOW

Take the drive with us! You can participate in the Drive even if you already recruit volunteers online through other sites. We’ll be right there with you as we reach out to our networks across the country and direct them to the online pledge page where they can find their closest registered Meals on Wheels program. So, register now and don't miss out on the action.

If you have any questions, please contact Member Communications Manager, Lauren Fielder, at lauren@mealsonwheelsamerica.org or 571-339-1621.

Learn more about our first Online Volunteer Drive and register by Friday, May 29.

A VOICE FOR SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAMS DURING OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

We’ve leveraged the high profile of Older Americans Month to further advocate for senior nutrition programs across the country. Our President and CEO Ellie Hollander and Board of Directors took to Capitol Hill to advocate on your behalf and to share why legislation like the Older Americans Act should be strengthened and reauthorized to support our nation's most vulnerable seniors.

                                             board1

MEALS ON WHEELS AMERICA BOARD ADVOCATES ON THE HILL

Some of our staff joined our Meals on Wheels America Board to meet with nearly 40 congressional offices, including House and Senate Leadership offices and Appropriations Committee Members. Together, we advocated for increased senior nutrition program funding and the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act - the most critical piece of legislation that helps support more than 5,000 programs like yours nationwide. We were able to convey its importance and make the case for continued funding, reauthorization and protection.  You can use our talking points and an array of other tools that can all be found in Member Central for your own advocacy. You can also check out pictures from our visit here.

ELLIE HOLLANDER SPEAKS TO SENATE STEERING AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander spoke at a roundtable meeting before the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee regarding the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act and the crucial role that it plays for senior nutrition programs. Ellie made the case that Meals on Wheels programs provide so much more than a meal and explained why important legislation like the Older American Act should be reauthorized.

AND MORE

In addition, we recently helped lead an effort to send a national sign-on letter to Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Reid (D-NV) calling on them to bring the Older Americans Act to the Senate floor for consideration. Read that letter here.

For more information regarding our national advocacy efforts, please reach out to Chief Advocacy and Government Affairs Officer Erika Kelly at erika@mealsonwheelsamerica.org or 571-339-1604 and/or our Public Policy Manager Crystal Espie at crystal@mealsonwheelsamerica.org or 571-339-1613.

2015 CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED

Meals on Wheels America is acutely aware that every program makes tough spending decisions each day based on growing need and limited funds. With that said, we are pleased to announce the award of $75,000 in scholarship grants to 100 Member programs, making it possible for them to send someone to join their colleagues in Orlando this September. Scholarship funding is provided by Subaru of America through our participation in the 2014-2015 "Share the Love" event.

Those Members who received 2015 Conference Scholarships can find more information and their required activities here.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

SENSORS REPORTING HOME ACTIVITY NOW ON THE RISE

It’s now easier and more affordable than ever to make aging in place safer for seniors. Advances in low-cost, in-home sensors and wireless networks are enabling families to invest in monitoring their senior loved-ones from afar. These tiny sensors monitor movements and activity that range from opening the refrigerator to closing the bathroom door, and they make notes on a digital logbook that can be reported to others. Learn how companies are going beyond home security programs to creating products that help keep seniors at home, where they want to be here.

VETERANS PROVIDE A GREAT SOURCE OF VOLUNTEER PROSPECTS

The 2015 Veterans Civic Health Index, a major study conducted by the National Conference on Citizenship and Got Your 6, revealed positive trends in the levels of civic engagement among veterans – making them an attractive target for volunteer recruitment efforts.

Key research findings include:

  • Veterans volunteer more hours than others
  • Veterans are more likely to attend community meetings, solve neighborhood problems and step up to leadership roles in local organizations
  • Veterans are more involved in civic organizations.

RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO HELP PROTECT SENIORS FINANCIALLY

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal agency dedicated to protecting consumers in the marketplace, has an office dedicated to helping senior consumers and their caregivers.  It’s called the Office for Older Americans, and it has been busy at work creating several easy-to-understand guides and resources to help protect your clients from financial abuse and to help them to make sound financial decisions as they age.

Some of the tools they offer include:

  • Guides on how consumers and their caregivers can identify and prevent common scams
  • Curriculum on how to help family members and friends manage the money and/or property of a loved one who is no longer able make financial decisions
  • Instructor-led training modules designed to facilitate meetings with your clients and their  caregivers on how to make informed financial decisions

WHAT MEMBER ATTENDEES HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Very exciting news! We have been dreaming about this for so long!  And I say "dreaming" because we knew we could not afford it and it's been so long of a wait.

Wow – I can't remember being this excited about Meals on Wheels’ outreach efforts in the seven years that I have worked for my organization.

I am so very excited! As a small program, there is NO WAY we could have this kind of ad campaign!

This is very exciting news. I foresee great results for Meals on Wheels programs around the country.

Thank you for all of your efforts on our behalf!!!! WOW! What a great step for Meals on Wheels!

Extremely good news. I'm very excited about the modernization of the messaging. I think this is a fantastic opportunity that will produce real results.

NEXT STEPS

Expect to be hearing a lot from us as we lead up to 2016’s first-quarter launch of the TV, radio, billboard and social media campaign that will be running throughout the country for the next three years. Working in partnership with the Ad Council and the fabulous advertising agency they secured on our behalf, Anomaly, we’re looking forward to accomplishing great things.
While we are working to develop the campaign, there are some important things you can do as well to prepare.

1.  SHARE THE NEWS

Members-only can log into the
Member Central Brand Resources section of our website to access all of the Town Hall’s materials that you can use to share the news with your staff, Board of Directors and volunteers. While we're in these early stages – please share these resources with your Meals on Wheels family ONLY.

2.  ADOPT THE NATIONAL BRAND AS YOUR OWN

The best way to create an impactful, visual tie between your program and the national campaign will be to adopt our new logo or Member Brand Badge as your own. Learn more here and keep your eyes open for additional information about how to make this happen in your community.

3.  JOIN THE AD COUNCIL MEMBER ADVISORY COMMITTEE

If you'd like to nominate yourself or someone on your staff or Board to be a part of the Ad Council Member Advisory Committee, please email adcouncil@mealsonwheelsamerica.org with two to three sentences on why you or they would be a great addition to the committee by this Sunday, May 31. We anticipate the commitment to be three to four virtual meetings between now and the time the campaign launches.

We look forward to keeping you posted on the good news ahead!

CONNECT YOUR CLIENTS WITH NUTRITIONAL RESOURCES FOR THE KIDS THEY LIVE WITH

Research shows that seniors who live in households with children are at much greater risk of hunger. Fortunately, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that helps keep kids healthy and fed during the summer months. You can connect your clients who live with children to a local SFSP site in the following ways:

    • Text "Food" to 877-877
    • Call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3HUNGRY
    • Find a local site online here

There’s also time to sign up as an SFSP sponsor. SFSP sponsors can add free meals for kids through federal funding at your existing congregate site to help serve kids during the summer break. This program can result in serving more seniors through extra funding, acquiring larger volunteer bases and new, productive community partnerships. Learn more about becoming an SFSP sponsor here. You can also check out more Summer Meals program resources through the No Kid Hungry Center for Best Practices website here.
