Every day, tens of thousands of older adults are told they must wait for Meals on Wheels. This three-part series shares powerful stories that reveal the human cost of waitlists—hunger, health decline, unsafe choices, and families stretched thin. These stories are a call to action: to increase funding so no senior has to wait for the meals, safety checks and companionship they deserve.
Every day across America, older adults reach out to Meals on Wheels hoping for help with food and connection. Too often, the answer they hear is “you will have to wait.” Right now, tens of thousands of seniors are on waitlists because demand for services has far outpaced available funding.
This three-part series shares real stories from the Meals on Wheels network to show what waiting really means. It is not just about delayed meals. It is about empty cupboards, unsafe choices, families stretched beyond their limits and veterans going hungry at home.
Together, these stories illustrate what is at stake as Congress fails to increase funding for Meals on Wheels programs. They are a call to action: to protect and expand funding so that no senior has to wait for food, safety checks and companionship that should never be out of reach.
